We’re Amy and Luna from San Francisco. We met in downtown San Francisco on a chilly winter evening. We have been together since 2015 and have been married since 2017. We’ve enjoyed growing as a couple over the years and are excited to begin the next step in our family’s journey. We’re both aunts to nieces and nephews on both sides of the family and long for the opportunity to nurture a child in our own home.
Balance is very important to us in our lives and in our home. We’re a good team, we take the time to be present for each other, to listen to each other’s needs, and to make space for the things that each of us is passionate about.
We are both passionate about the work that we do but our home life is really what we look forward to. We love to build community and often do this by going to the same spots for breakfast on the weekend or coffee during the workweek. Our friends and neighbors know us by name and this makes our City feel small.
We’re creatures of habit in many ways. On the weekend Amy goes to the farmer’s market and buys all the produce for the week. When she’s out Luna takes care of the household stuff so we can start our weekend stress free.
Our friends tease us a bit and call us grandmas because we go to bed way earlier than them, but that’s just so we can get up early and enjoy the whole day. We like it this way.
On a regular night you can find us at our kitchen table after dinner playing a game of cards, we think it’s Rummy but the rules have been interpreted by us…it’s not real Rummy, it’s Harms Family Rummy.
Amy is a person who is truly meant to be a parent. She is nurturing and patient. She’s excited about everything in life, celebrating the “wins” and hugging away the “challenges”. Amy is a teacher who works with students who have learning disabilities. Amy’s experiences as both a coach and a teacher have provided her with amazing experiences to mentor, lead, and support children from a variety of backgrounds. Any child that joins our family will be well-loved, well supported, and truly cherished by Amy. Amy is passionate about cooking, often making incredible messes in the kitchen that, more often than not, end up being a culinary success.
I know that may sound a bit cheeky, but my wife is wise. Luna is knowledgeable in ways that I’ve never experienced until her. She is graceful, strong, curious, playful, and artistic. She is passionate and the protector of those she loves. Luna works in two worlds, one is technology and the other is traditional Chinese medicine. Luna has recently developed an interest in indoor gardening which has brought new life into our home. The sunniest window is now the home of vegetables, fruits, and bunches of flowers that bring us joy when they bloom.
Living in San Francisco, where Amy was born, has its perks. We are close to many things we like to celebrate; nature, good food, our friends and family. Luna is originally from Philadelphia and we prioritize a visit to our “east coast home” at least once a year.
We live in a spacious condo with great views of the SF hills and sunsets. We have become condo gardeners during the last 2 years and our home is full of flowering plants as well as fruiting plants on our balcony. We currently have a gorgeous lavender as well as lemons, blueberries and strawberries that are good enough to eat right off the plant!
Our condo has plenty of room for a family and is full of love, good music, comfy places to sit and talk and great amounts of sunshine to curl up and take a nap in. Our bookshelves are full of gardening books, cookbooks, books about birds (a new passion in Covid times), the Harry Potter collection, Calvin & Hobbes and many puzzles which have kept us busy during the last few months.
We’re both aunts to nieces and nephews on both sides of our families; we love spending our time with them and watching them grow. We are excited about the new relationships that adopting will create in our family and we know our nieces and nephews are looking forward to having a new cousin too!
Luna’s extended family is all on the East Coast and we do our best to visit at least once a year so we can stay as connected as possible. Amy’s extended family is pretty big and most are in the Bay Area – this leads to many family gatherings during the year and traditions that are usually hosted around a Christmas tree or a BBQ.
As an interracial couple, we understand that life and relationships have many complexities. We realize that we have so much to learn and share with the child that we are chosen to raise. We know that we are ready and at a place in our lives where welcoming a child into our home is the next beautiful and natural step for us. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us. Please know that we look forward to connecting with you and spending time learning about you and the dreams you have for your child. We are so grateful for your interest in our story.
