Hawaii! We go every winter.
Jay and his sister are both adopted and so is our daughter Mabel.
Hi, we’re Jay & Staci. Thank you for stopping to hear our story. Our daughter Mabel joined our family through open adoption and she can’t wait to be a big sister! We live in Southern California and our family loves riding roller coasters at Disneyland, swimming, reading books and flying in our airplane. Jay is a Disney Imagineer and Staci is a college professor. We have a dog named Bo and a cat named Pip.
We weren’t able to conceive after years of trying and we knew there were many different ways to create a family. Adoption was a natural choice of us because Jay and his sister were both adopted and so were Staci’s cousins. Our daughter Mabel joined us through open adoption in 2013.
Our relationship with Mabel’s birth mom is very special, and one reason we chose open adoption again.
Home Is Wherever We’re Together
We live about 20 minutes east of Los Angeles with our six-year-old daughter Mabel, our dog, Bo and our cat, Pip.
We’ve been together for 14 years and our relationship is built on love, communication and teamwork. We work as a team to manage the household duties and take turns cooking dinner, walking the dogs, giving baths, and reading bedtime stories.
I always wanted to fly airplanes and live in California, and now I do both. I’m a private pilot, and we own a small airplane. The whole family loves to go flying – dog included! We love taking day trips to cities around the West Coast, constantly searching for the best hamburger in California.
I was born in Nebraska and adopted when I was a month old. Adoption has always been a part of my life. When I was six, my family moved to Greenville, South Carolina, which I consider my “hometown.” I love southern cooking, southern hospitality, and I can even speak “southerner.”
We all get ready together in the morning before I head to my job at Disney where I’m an Imagineer.
Our weekends are usually pretty packed – playing with friends, hanging out in our backyard, visiting local beaches, parks and musuems, and of course, flying. But in my spare time, I like to work on projects around the house and on our airplane. I’m also coaching Mabel’s softball team this year.
Growing up I knew I wanted to explore the world. I grew up in Topeka, Kansas but I’ve been able to live in some amazing cities like Seattle, Knoxville, New York and San Francisco. Now, I call Southern California my home.
I love singing and dancing to Disney songs around the house, and I can often be found baking or decorating cakes or cupcakes for my family’s birthdays and holidays.
Halloween is my favorite holiday, and I love creating costumes for the family and decorating our house.
I’m also learning sign language. We introduced Mabel to sign language when she was a baby and found we still use it sometimes today to communicate with each other. I wanted to learn more so I’m taking an online class once a week.
I’m an assistant professor at a private university where I teach communication. I get long winter breaks and summers off! My schedule is flexible so I can take Mabel to theatre class, MyGym and swimming lessons. And of course, we go to Disneyland A LOT!
Mabel has a big heart and a sweet personality. We know she will be the most amazing, caring big sister! She is constantly talking about the things she wants to teach her sibling and looks forward to welcoming another child into our family.
Mabel is the happiest, chattiest kid! She climbs, twirls, sings, dances, tells jokes, and plays with her dog and friends outside. She takes swim lessons and gymnastics and recently started playing softball (Jay is the team coach).
Mabel is a compassionate, curious child who loves to read books, do art, play games and tell jokes. She attends first grade at our local public school just a few blocks from where Staci teaches.
Bo is our 2-year-old Lab mix. She has lots of puppy energy and loves running in our yard with Mabel. Bo completed doggie training classes and passed with flying colors! She follows Mabel everywhere and will certainly enjoy having another little one to play with.
Pip aka Dr. Mr. Pippers, is a curious, active orange tabby (he’s still a kitten, not even a year old yet) and he’s the latest addition to our family. He loves playing with Bo and snuggling with Mabel when we read books.
We Believe In Laughter, Hugs & Kisses
Everyone is a unique individual, and we don’t think there is one “right’ way to parent. Our basic approach to parenting is to teach our children to be kind, considerate and respectful of other people’s feelings and grow up to be the best adults they can be.
We both believe strongly in the healing power of a good cry and a good laugh. We tell a lot of jokes and like to give each other a hard time. It’s all in good fun!
We want our children to experience as many different people, places and things as possible, so they grow up appreciating all that the world has to offer.
Life is meant to be enjoyed and we plan to enjoy every minute of it! We love that parenting gives us an opportunity to explore the world and learn as our children learn.
