Alameda, CA, an idyllic island town in the San Francisco Bay on a leafy street with large trees and great neighbors
Our family tradition has become Christmas at the Beach, and it's something our whole family looks forward to
The library, our local beach we can walk to from our house, the Oakland Zoo, and neighborhood walks
Andy likes gardening and taking pictures, and Joseph loves to read and cook
Andy speaks English, Chinese, and Japanese, and Joseph has a collection of original comic book art
We met almost 15 years ago in San Francisco, a few months before Andy moved to Philadelphia for grad school. He moved back to the Bay Area right after. We’ve been together ever since then, and we got married in April 2017.
About 4 years ago, Adelaide and Astrid came into our family just months apart from each other – Adelaide through an open adoption and Astrid through surrogacy (a close family friend was our surrogate).
We’ve always wanted a bigger family with the joy of many kids. Now that Adelaide and Astrid are a little older, we’re excited to grow our family through adoption.
Our family traditions include homemade cakes for every birthday, pizza picnics in front of the TV on Friday nights, cookies after dentist appointments, mooncakes for Mid-Autumn festival, and Christmas at the beach.
Joseph loves literature and stories. He double majored in English and Religious Studies at UC Berkeley, and reads every night. Joseph finds that a lot of wisdom in life can come from books, and sometimes he cares for the characters he reads about like they’re real people.
Joseph is an immensely empathetic dad who’s always looking to understand and anticipate how our kids feel, and he works hard to make their lives exciting and magical, while teaching them always to be empathetic themselves, and to do the right thing. He also has a lifelong love for comic books. Joseph enjoys sharing his love for reading, comics and stories with our girls and looks forward to having another little one to read to.
Joseph runs a small consulting business with a partner, supporting startups and other small organizations with their business operations. This enables Joseph to work from home, where he has flexibility to pick up the kids from school and spend a little more time with them.
Joseph’s hobbies are reading and cooking, and loves involving our kids in both activities.
Andy likes to read too. He likes science books—about the planet, about animals, about astronomy—and books about cities, about history, and about interesting people. Andy is naturally a bit of a dreamer, and always has some kind of creative pursuit. This includes furnishing or improving our home, gardening, and writing.
Andy enjoys having fun and silly moments with their kids: singing songs, pretending to be a monster, playing dress-up, or having dance parties. When Astrid and Adelaide want a shoulder ride or a pretend horseback ride, he can hardly ever say no.
Andy has recently written a children’s book that’s in the process of being shared with major publishers. Andy loves travel, and looks forward to experiencing new places with their kids.
Andy works in real estate development, building new neighborhoods in the Bay Area with homes, offices, and parks.
We live in Alameda, California, an idyllic island town in the San Francisco Bay Area where sometimes it feels like time moves a little more slowly. We live on a leafy street with great neighbors who also have young kids. On weekends, we go on bike rides, or we walk to the park or to the beach. On our walks, we sometimes spot turkeys, or we stop to admire fairy doors at the bases of trees. Alameda weather is mild, and we love to grab lunch outdoors while people-watching.
Joseph’s family has Portuguese roots on both sides. Joseph’s family has been in the Bay Area for several generations. Andy’s parents grew up in Taiwan and met in California, where Andy was born.
Andy grew up speaking Chinese with his family. Having a connection to his family’s cultural traditions is vital to him – mooncakes at Mid-Autumn Festival, big dinners at Chinese New Year, shoes off in the house, and most importantly, honoring and respecting one’s elders.
One of our good friends told us once that one reason to have kids is to pass on all the love and every good thing that your parents gave you. We believe that too, and we hope to give your child a place in our loving family.
Our adopted daughter, Adelaide, knows where she came from and we communicate regularly with her birth mother. We would want you to have a relationship and level of interaction with your child that makes you comfortable, as well. We look forward to meeting you.
